MAY

The Stourbridge & District Cricket Society will be holding a Jubilee Luncheon on Wednesday 28 September, fifty years to the day of its launch in 1972.
The occasion will also pay tribute to ‘The Headley Trilogy’, namely Dean, Ron and the late George Headley. The trio made history by being the first instance – world-wide –of three generations of the same family to play cricket at Test level for their country.

We are delighted to announce that Dean and Ron Headley will be guests of honour at the luncheon; Dean was capped 15 times for England in the 1990s before a number of injuries forced his retirement. Ron played twice for West Indies in 1974 and 403 first-class matches for Worcestershire. George, who died in 1983, played 22 Tests for West Indies, mostly prior to WW2, was the first black man to captain West Indies.

All three have strong connections with the local area. Dean was born in Stourbridge and educated variously at Gigmill School, Oldswinford Hospital School, and Royal Grammar School, Worcester. He played cricket locally for Old Hill CC. His father, Ron lived in Stourbridge for many years and besides playing for Worcestershire, turned out for Dudley, and Old Hill Cricket Clubs. After retiring from first-class cricket, George captained Dudley CC to an unprecedented championship success in winning the Birmingham League in  1952.

Besides the two Headleys, other luncheon guests will include various cricketing personalities from both county and club level – and perhaps higher!

The Jubilee Luncheon will take place at The Fox Inn, Stourton, near Stourbridge, at 12noon for 12.30pm. A dwindling number of tickets, priced at £30 per person, are still available.
If you are a cricket lover and wish to attend (wives are also welcome), please submit your interest by using the contact form.

We look forward to welcoming you!
